Hong Kong data centres and AI are pushing electricity demand higher. What the energy supercycle means for the grid and low-carbon power

The IEA projects global data centre electricity use will more than double to 945 TWh by 2030, with AI as the main driver. In Hong Kong, CBRE puts active data centre capacity at 687 MW with another 653 MW in the pipeline, and many older facilities were designed for rack densities far below what AI workloads need. That gap changes more than power consumption. AI servers often need 40 kW per rack or more, compared with 5 to 15 kW for traditional setups. That raises the bar for cooling, electrical design, backup systems, and grid connections. The open question is whether Hong Kong can deliver reliable, lower-carbon power fast enough, or whether the next wave of data centres locks in fossil generation.
