Hollywood Carbon Offset Pilot: Film and TV Production Emissions Targeted with Methane Well Plugging Credits

A new pilot partnership between the Well Done Foundation and Atlantic Media Group PLC aims to measure and offset carbon emissions from film and television production. Starting in 2027, AMG will calculate the carbon footprint of participating productions and fund the plugging of abandoned oil and gas wells through verified carbon credits. The Well Done Foundation issues credits and offset certificates only after the well plugging work is completed, ensuring that claims are backed by actual methane reduction. Most productions are expected to generate between 250 and 400 metric tons of CO2e. The pilot uses a reduced credit rate of $20 per ton, compared to the foundation's standard $25. The initiative targets the entertainment industry's often overlooked emissions from travel, energy use, and production logistics. If successful, it could provide a model for other studios and production companies to follow with verifiable, action-based offset programs rather than purely optics-driven sustainability efforts.
