Holker Estate in Cumbria is piloting paludiculture, a wet farming technique that grows crops on naturally waterlogged land. Unlike traditional farming, this method avoids draining the soil, which helps preserve the carbon stored in peatlands and supports local biodiversity. The project currently focuses on cultivating Typha, or bulrush, using drone technology for planting. These plants provide natural fibers for sustainable insulation and fashion, creating a commercial use for land that was previously considered difficult to farm.
