Holcim launches low-carbon cement and recycling platform in UAE to cut construction emissions

Holcim has introduced its ECOPlanet low-carbon cement and ECOCycle circular construction platform in the UAE. The ECOPlanet cement uses locally sourced materials and offers a carbon footprint roughly 30 percent lower than conventional cement while keeping similar performance. The ECOCycle platform is designed to recover and recycle construction and demolition waste into new building materials, with recycled content ranging from 10 to 100 percent depending on the product. Construction and demolition waste makes up an estimated 70 to 75 percent of the UAE's solid waste stream. Holcim says ECOCycle supports the country's goal of diverting 75 percent of waste from landfill. The low-carbon cement is already being used by UAE ready-mix producer Conmix on a construction project. These moves align with tightening sustainability targets in the region's building sector.

The 30 percent reduction is decent but not revolutionary. What matters is how fast they can scale this beyond one project with Conmix. UAE has aggressive waste diversion targets but execution is everything.

Agreed. Also curious about the energy source for production. Lower carbon cement often relies on alternative fuels or clinker substitution. If the local grid is still gas heavy, the net benefit might be less than advertised.

Waste diversion from construction is a huge issue in the Gulf. If ECOCycle can actually hit 100 percent recycled content in some products without losing performance, that is a bigger deal than the cement blend itself.
