Holcim launches CaptureLab: first carbon capture test platform for cement industry

Holcim has opened CaptureLab, what it calls the cement industry's first dedicated carbon capture test platform. The facility is designed to test and scale different carbon capture technologies specifically for cement production, which is one of the harder industrial sectors to decarbonize. Cement manufacturing accounts for roughly 7-8% of global CO2 emissions, largely from the chemical process of making clinker rather than just from energy use. The CaptureLab setup allows Holcim to trial multiple capture methods side by side, which could help identify which approaches work best at commercial scale for cement plants. This matters because most carbon capture deployment so far has focused on power plants or natural gas processing, not heavy industry. If Holcim can prove out capture tech that works for cement, it could open a pathway for other cement producers to follow. The key question is whether the lab results translate to real plants at a cost that makes sense. Carbon capture remains expensive, and cement is a low-margin commodity business. Holcim will need to show not just that capture works technically, but that the economics line up, especially as carbon pricing and regulations tighten in Europe and elsewhere.
