Holcim and 44.01 have started a carbon capture and underground mineralization pilot at Holcim's Fujairah cement plant in the UAE. The project captures CO2 from the plant's flue gas, moves it to a nearby storage site, and injects it into reactive ultramafic rock where it mineralizes into stable carbonate. Holcim says it is the UAE's first live-condition pilot of this kind in the cement industry. The setup uses Shell CANSOLV capture technology through NT Energies, with Gulf Cryo handling CO2 transport and local support from Fujairah Natural Resources Corporation and the Fujairah Environment Authority. The companies describe it as a step toward scaling permanent carbon removal and building CO2 value chains that connect capture, transport, and storage. The pilot supports the UAE's net zero by 2050 goal and Holcim's broader decarbonization roadmap.
