HKEX Green Equity Certification: Hong Kong Stock Exchange Launches Voluntary Label for Green Companies
finance.biggo.comHong Kong Stock Exchange launched a voluntary green equity certification on October 20. The program, called HKEX Green Equity, uses independent reviewers to check whether listed companies have a relatively high share of green business. Certified companies can display a mark but must pass annual assessments to keep it. The goal is to give investors a clearer signal when picking sustainable stocks. The certification sits alongside HKEX's existing sustainability work, including climate disclosure, carbon credit products and Chinese green electricity certificates. It also connects to the Hong Kong Green Taxonomy, which defines what counts as green. That link is important because the value of the label depends on how strict the definition is. Because participation is voluntary, the program's real impact will depend on how many issuers apply and whether investors treat the mark as meaningful. Companies with mixed revenue streams, such as utilities or manufacturers with both green and conventional businesses, will be the hard cases to assess. The first certified companies will show how the framework works in practice.
