HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has received approval in principle from the Korean Register for the design concept of a 10,000 TEU container ship that runs on marine biofuel. Marine biofuel blends vegetable and animal oils with conventional bunker fuel to cut carbon emissions. The approval was announced at the Posidonia 2026 exhibition in Athens, as tighter IMO rules and the EU's FuelEU Maritime regulation push shipping toward lower carbon fuels. HJ Shipbuilding says the certification confirms the technical feasibility and safety of the biofuel propulsion system for mid to large container ships. The company expects this to help secure orders in the growing eco-friendly vessel market. CEO Yoo Sang cheol stated that building decarbonized ships is essential for reducing greenhouse gases, and the firm aims to build shipowner trust through this technology.
