HJ Shipbuilding and SDSU partner on AI friction stir welding for lighter, low-carbon ships
biz.chosun.comHJ Shipbuilding & Construction has been selected as the lead institution for a Korea-U.S. joint shipbuilding R&D project and signed an agreement with San Diego State University to develop next-generation welding technology. The project focuses on friction stir welding (FSW), a method that joins metals using frictional heat and pressure without melting them, enabling high-strength welding on aluminum panels. This approach improves fuel efficiency by making ships lighter and supports demand for low-carbon vessels. The research is part of eight Korea-U.S. joint R&D projects and involves the Research Institute of Medium & Small Shipbuilding, Kyungpook National University, and South Korean firms Sangrim MSP, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Hanwha Ocean. The goal is to commercialize AI-linked FSW systems for autonomous manufacturing of aluminum patrol craft panels, combining the strengths of both countries to advance eco-friendly shipbuilding.
