Himalayan glaciers melting 65% faster, but only 21 of 40,000 are monitored: report

New research from Systemiq, prepared with ICIMOD and other partners, finds Himalayan glaciers are losing mass about 65% faster than a decade ago. Only around 21 of an estimated 40,000 glaciers in the region are monitored in detail. That gap matters because melting ice is feeding glacial lakes that can burst, as seen in the 2023 Sikkim flood that killed at least 70 people and damaged roads, bridges and hydropower projects. The report also links about one-third of Himalayan glacier melt to black carbon from sources like brick kilns, which means local action on soot could slow part of the loss. With Himalayan water tied to roughly 20% of India's GDP and many river basins expected to hit peak water around mid-century, the economic and infrastructure stakes are high. The authors call for stronger monitoring, better early warning systems, and more investment in protecting communities that depend on the mountains.
