The study highlights that while most fires are started by people, hotter and drier conditions are what allow them to spread and become severe. This has direct implications for carbon storage in Himalayan forests, which hold an estimated 3.2 billion tonnes of carbon. As temperatures climb, the risk of losing that stored carbon to fire increases, creating a feedback loop that accelerates climate change. The findings underscore the need for fire management strategies that account for rising temperatures, not just human behavior, including controlled burns and better monitoring of fire lines.
