A new report from the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department and the Bharti Institute of Public Policy at the Indian School of Business estimates the state's forest bio-economy at ₹22,600 crore. The study finds that forests can generate nearly 50,000 days of local employment through sustainable harvesting of wild mangoes, amla, rhododendron, and pine needles. Pine needles alone, a major fire risk, could be turned into eco-coal worth ₹5,500 crore annually. The report also highlights that Himachal's forests have sequestered 258 million tonnes of carbon, underscoring their role in climate mitigation. This is the first time AI, satellite imagery, and scientific mapping have been combined for a comprehensive forest resource survey in the state. The findings point to a significant opportunity for carbon finance and sustainable rural livelihoods.

The numbers here are interesting but I want to see how they plan to actually get pine needle collection and eco coal production off the ground. That is a lot of biomass and a lot of potential revenue but execution is everything.

The 258 million tonnes of carbon sequestered is a big number. If they can monetize that through carbon credits it could fund a lot of the forest management and community programs they are talking about. Needs a clear accounting framework though.

50,000 days of employment sounds like a lot but spread over a year that is only about 137 full time jobs. The real story might be the value of the raw materials and whether processing can happen locally or gets shipped out.

The report was done by ISB and the forest department. I would like to see the methodology for valuing those wild fruits and pine needles. Market prices for raw forest produce can be volatile. The carbon sequestration number seems more solid if they used standard IPCC methods.

Using AI and satellite data for forest surveys is a good step. But the real test is whether the state can actually set up collection centers, processing units, and market linkages. Without that the employment numbers stay theoretical.

The eco coal from pine needles angle is smart. It addresses both a fire risk and creates a fuel source. But I wonder about the emissions from burning that eco coal versus leaving the biomass to decompose naturally. Net carbon impact matters.
