Hilo and Kona Airports Achieve Level 3 Carbon Accreditation in Hawaii

Two airports on Hawaii's Big Island, Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport and Hilo International Airport, have reached Level 3 under the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program. The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced that five state airports now hold this certification, which requires mapping airport-wide carbon emissions, setting a net-zero target, reducing emissions below a three year rolling average, and engaging partners on third party emissions. The state has set a goal to cut airport controlled carbon emissions by 50 percent by 2030 and reach net zero by 2045. Strategies include vehicle electrification, expanded emissions inventory, and a clean transportation roadmap. The accreditation is managed by Airports Council International Europe and is considered a global standard for airport carbon management.
