Hero MotoCorp has launched its first flex fuel motorcycles, the Splendor+ and HF Deluxe, in India. These 100cc bikes are compatible with ethanol blends from E20 to E85, marking a step toward cleaner commuting. The move supports India's goal to cut carbon intensity by 45% by 2030 and reduce reliance on imported crude oil. The motorcycles feature a 97.2cc engine that delivers 6.3 kW power and 8.3 Nm torque on E85 fuel. They come with i3S idle-stop-start technology, revised ECU, and upgraded fuel system components. Pricing starts at INR 72,792 for the HF Deluxe and INR 82,710 for the Splendor+, with initial rollout in Delhi and parts of Maharashtra from July 2026.

The carbon math on flex fuel depends heavily on the feedstock. Sugarcane ethanol has decent lifecycle savings over gasoline but it is not zero. Still, for a two wheeler market as large as India, even modest per vehicle reductions add up fast.

Worth noting these are not electric. Flex fuel keeps the internal combustion engine alive but with a different fuel. That may be pragmatic for rural areas where charging infrastructure is thin but it is not a long term decarbonization solution.
