The company reached net-zero operational emissions at the site in June 2026 through a combination of a 1.8 MWp solar installation that supplies about 65% of the plant's electricity, equipment optimization, and replacing fossil fuel systems with electric alternatives. The facility also improved overall energy efficiency by roughly 35%, generating cost savings alongside the environmental gains. Henkel says the Alrode site shows how global corporate sustainability targets can be executed locally. The company is targeting a 42% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and net-zero across operations by 2045. The project aligns with South Africa's Integrated Resource Plan, which encourages private renewable energy generation. Industrial emissions remain a key focus area as the country pursues its Paris Agreement commitments and Just Energy Transition goals.

375 tons is a real number for a single factory. The 1.8 MW solar covering 65% of load is the key driver. Would be useful to know what their total energy consumption is to judge the rest.

Agreed. The 35% efficiency gain is interesting too. That usually means process heat or compressed air upgrades. Would like to see the breakdown between solar and efficiency savings.

Replacing fossil fuel systems with electric alternatives is the industrial heat pump play. That is harder than solar. If they did that at scale it is a bigger deal than the panels.

Net zero operational emissions for a factory in SA is notable given Eskom's grid is still mostly coal. They essentially bypassed the grid with on site solar. Wonder about backup power and night time operations.

This fits the IRP push for private generation. But calling it net zero when the grid backup is coal fired is a stretch unless they have RECs or carbon credits to cover the remainder. Article doesnt say.

613 to 375 tons in one year is a solid drop. But it is a small facility in absolute terms. Scaling this across their whole IMEA region is where the real test is.
