Henkel has reached carbon neutral production at its Kurkumbh site in India by replacing furnace oil based thermic fluid heaters with high efficiency electric systems and sourcing 100% renewable electricity. The upgrade eliminated roughly 11,300 tons of CO2 equivalent from Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. A similar electrification project at its Gebkim plant in Turkey replaced a natural gas boiler with an electric boiler system, cutting about 956 tons of CO2 equivalent annually. The company states it is systematically phasing out fossil fuels across its global production network and scaling electrification powered by renewables. The Kurkumbh site required upgrades to electrical capacity and heat exchangers to support full electrification. Henkel aims to decarbonize its operations by 2030 and these site level milestones show how industrial heat can be electrified at scale.

The 11,300 tons figure is for one site. Henkel has many plants. The question is how fast they can replicate this across the whole network. Electrification of industrial heat is still early stage for most manufacturers.

Worth noting they had to upgrade electrical capacity and install high efficiency heat exchangers. That is a capital intensive retrofit. The site level approach works but scaling it requires grid capacity and equipment supply chains that are still tight.

The article says they eliminated Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Scope 3 is not addressed here. For an adhesives company, raw material emissions are likely significant. Carbon neutral production is a milestone but not full value chain decarbonization.

Replacing furnace oil heaters with electric is a straightforward retrofit if the electrical infrastructure can handle the load. The heat exchanger upgrade is key. Would be useful to see the payback period and whether they used any government incentives for the electrification.
