Henkel has reached carbon neutral production at its Kurkumbh plant in India and Gebkim plant in Turkey. Both sites eliminated Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by replacing fossil fuel heating systems with electric boilers and heat exchangers, and by sourcing 100% renewable electricity. The Kurkumbh plant cut about 11,300 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually, while the Gebkim plant cut roughly 956 tonnes. The projects are part of Henkel's broader plan to fully decarbonize its global operations by 2030. The company is systematically replacing fossil fuels with electrified processes powered by renewables. These milestones show that industrial decarbonization is achievable at site level with targeted investment in energy infrastructure upgrades and clean power procurement.

Nice to see a concrete industrial decarbonization case. Replacing furnace oil with electric heaters and going to 100% renewables is straightforward but not cheap. Would be good to know the payback period on those upgrades.

Agreed. The India plant cut 11,300 tonnes CO2e which is significant for a single site. But the Turkey plant only did 956 tonnes. Wonder if that reflects different scale or just a smaller facility.

Both sites eliminated Scope 1 and 2. That's the easy part if you have grid access and can buy RECs. Real test is Scope 3 supply chain emissions. Henkel's 2030 goal covers all scopes or just own operations?

Article says net zero across value chain by 2030. That would include Scope 3. But achieving it with adhesive manufacturing supply chains is ambitious. These site level wins are good proof points but the heavy lifting is upstream.

Electrifying industrial heat is the right move. Heat pumps or electric boilers can replace gas boilers in many cases. The Kurkumbh upgrade with heat exchangers and load optimization shows they thought about efficiency first before just swapping fuel.
