Henkel announced carbon-neutral production at its Adhesive Technologies manufacturing sites in Kurkumbh, India, and Gebkim, Turkey. The company eliminated Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by replacing fossil fuel heating systems with high-efficiency electric systems and sourcing 100% renewable electricity. At the Kurkumbh facility in Maharashtra, Henkel replaced furnace oil-based thermic fluid heaters with electric systems, cutting about 11,300 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions per year. The Gebkim plant in Turkey swapped a natural gas boiler for an electric boiler, reducing roughly 956 tonnes of CO2-equivalent annually. Both sites now run without direct fossil fuel combustion. Henkel targets full decarbonization of its operations by 2030. The company says these facilities show that fossil-fuel-free manufacturing can scale across regions, supporting broader industrial decarbonization goals.

11,300 tonnes CO2e from one site is not tiny. But I would like to see how they define carbon neutral here. Is it just operational emissions or does it include upstream supply chain?

They say Scope 1 and 2 only. So no embedded carbon in raw materials or logistics. Still, replacing furnace oil with electric heaters is a real move. The grid in Maharashtra is coal heavy though. So the 100% renewable claim matters a lot here.

Heat load optimization and better heat exchangers are the unsung part here. You cannot just swap in electric heaters and call it done. The efficiency gains from the retrofit itself probably cut the load before electrification. That is the part other factories should copy.

The 956 tonnes at Gebkim is small relative to Kurkumbh. But Turkey's grid is also fossil dependent. So the renewable electricity sourcing is the real lever. Without RECs or PPAs, this is just fuel switching with extra steps.

Henkel is a chemical company. If they can do this for adhesive plants, it shows industrial heat electrification is viable for medium temperature processes. The next question is how many of their other sites can follow without massive grid upgrades.
