Heliene and Solarcycle to use recycled solar glass in new panels, cutting waste and emissions
thecooldown.comHeliene, a solar panel maker with factories in Ontario and Minnesota, has signed a four year deal with recycling company Solarcycle. Solarcycle will supply roughly 20 million square meters of recycled solar glass for new Heliene modules. The glass will be made at a new Georgia facility and shipped domestically, which the companies say cuts transportation pollution by 50% and manufacturing pollution by 30% compared to the usual supply chain. Solar panel recycling is a small market in the U.S. because landfilling is cheaper, but this deal gives recycled glass a clear buyer. Solarcycle also estimates that recycling panels can reduce carbon pollution by anywhere from 97 pounds to 1.5 tons per panel. The arrangement is one example of how manufacturers are starting to close the loop on solar waste before the first large wave of panels reaches retirement age.
