HEINEKEN Malaysia has installed 3,500 solar panels on its Sungei Way Brewery roof, generating about 2,646 MWh per year and covering 17% of the brewery's electricity needs. The system cuts around 1,634 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. The company already sources 100% renewable electricity through Malaysia's Green Electricity Tariff program and uses biogas from its wastewater treatment plant for 4% of thermal energy needs. Since 2022, HEINEKEN Malaysia has reduced Scope 1 and 2 production emissions by 45%, on track for its 2040 net zero target. The brewery is also pushing suppliers into ESG reporting via the UN Global Compact platform. This is a concrete example of industrial decarbonization in Southeast Asia using on-site generation and grid-based renewables.

Nice to see a brewery actually putting panels on the roof instead of just buying offsets. 17% onsite is decent for an existing industrial site.

The 45% reduction since 2022 is the real number here. Most of that is probably from the GET green tariff rather than the solar. Still counts.

2,646 MWh from 3,500 panels works out to about 756 kWh per panel per year. That is reasonable for Malaysian insolation. Anybody know the capacity factor they are seeing?

Biogas from wastewater for 4% of thermal load is a nice touch. Small but it closes a loop. More breweries should do this.

GET program is key here. Without that green tariff the onsite solar would only cover 17%. The rest comes from policy design. Worth noting for other markets.

Would like to know what the payback period is on those panels. Industrial rooftop solar in Malaysia should be under 5 years with current prices. If they share the IRR that would be useful.
