UK construction firm Heidelberg Materials has supplied a lower carbon concrete mix for the basement floors of a redevelopment at 33-35 Piccadilly in London. The mix combines evoBuild cement made with carbon capture at its Brevik plant and evoBuild GGBS, a steel by-product, cutting carbon emissions by 35% compared to standard CEM I while improving durability. This is the first time this combination has been used in the UK. The project, owned by The Crown Estate and targeting NABERS 5* and BREEAM Outstanding ratings, is using around 3,000 m3 of the concrete. The team says the mix also avoids the slower curing times often seen with low carbon options, which helps keep construction on schedule. The concrete is supplied from Heidelberg's King's Cross plant.
