Heidelberg Materials ECOPlanet cement cuts CO2 by up to 50% in low-carbon construction

Heidelberg Materials is expanding its ECOPlanet cement line, a portfolio of low-clinker blended cements designed to cut lifecycle CO2 emissions by up to 50% compared to traditional Portland cement. The company achieves this by reducing the clinker content and substituting alternative binders like slag, fly ash, and calcined clays, while maintaining structural performance for use in ready-mix concrete, precast elements, and infrastructure projects. ECOPlanet cements are already available through European distributors and are tied to growing demand from green building certifications and public procurement rules that favor lower embodied carbon. Heidelberg Materials is publishing Environmental Product Declarations for these formulations, helping developers qualify for green loans and sustainability-linked bonds. The company positions ECOPlanet as an immediate emissions reduction lever that works with existing kiln assets, complementing longer-term carbon capture investments.
