Heidelberg Materials EcoCrete: lower clinker concrete for quieter, greener construction sites

Heidelberg Materials has launched EcoCrete, a ready-mix concrete range that cuts clinker content to reduce CO2 emissions while maintaining workability and strength. The product targets construction projects seeking green building certifications like DGNB, LEED, or BREEAM, especially in European markets where carbon pricing and regulation are tightening. EcoCrete uses supplementary cementitious materials such as slag and fly ash to replace clinker, the most carbon-intensive component in concrete. The company reports significant CO2 savings per cubic meter compared to standard mixes, aligning with its target to cut net emissions by 47 percent by 2030 versus 1990 levels. Site crews can expect similar pumping and finishing behavior, though contractors may need to adjust for slower strength gain in cold weather. Availability depends on regional supply of alternative materials, so EcoCrete is rolling out gradually across Europe first. It is one of several low-carbon products from Heidelberg Materials, alongside evoZero cement with CCS. For project owners, the concrete offers a way to document lower lifecycle emissions in public tenders and corporate sustainability reports.
