Hebel AAC water recycling cuts potable water use by 19,500 kilolitres per year in Australian manufacturing
architectureanddesign.com.auHebel, Australia's only manufacturer of Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC), has installed a closed-loop vacuum water cooling system at its production facility. Working with Gauge Engineering, the system recycles cooling water instead of drawing fresh potable water, cutting total site water usage by 14 percent. Line 1 saves 6,500 kilolitres per year and Line 2 saves 13,000 kilolitres, for a combined annual reduction of 19,500 kilolitres. The project was completed without disrupting production and went unnoticed by end users until results were shared. For architects and specifiers, this means Hebel AAC now carries a lower embodied water footprint. As water scarcity grows in Australia, material choices that reduce upstream consumption become more valuable. The project shows that industrial water efficiency can deliver substantial savings without complex technology or long downtime. It also demonstrates how manufacturing upgrades can support broader sustainability targets in the building supply chain.
