Hebei Shoulang Gets First ISCC EU Certification for Ethanol from Steel Mill Waste Gas
manilatimes.netHebei Shoulang in Tangshan, China, became the first facility to earn ISCC EU Recycled Carbon Fuel certification for ethanol produced from steel mill waste gases. The plant uses LanzaTech's gas fermentation technology to convert carbon-rich off-gas from steel production into ethanol. The certificate covers sustainability and greenhouse gas accounting under the EU's Renewable Energy Directive and is also recognized by the UK for its renewable transport fuel obligations. With this certification, certified volumes of the ethanol can be sold into EU marine and road fuel markets, and potentially into EU and UK aviation fuel markets where national rules allow. The facility worked with Meo Carbon Solutions on certification and with Brookfield to cover renewable power requirements, a key part of the carbon intensity calculation. The announcement gives a concrete example of how industrial waste carbon can move into regulated fuel markets rather than being flared.
