Heathrow Third Runway Conflicts With UK Net Zero Targets, Climate Advisers Warn
freemalaysiatoday.comThe UK Climate Change Committee has told the government it cannot approve a third runway at Heathrow while still meeting the 2050 net zero target. Under current policies, the advisers found no credible pathway for airport expansion unless airlines are required to cover the full cost of their emissions, either through sustainable aviation fuel or engineered carbon removals. SAF still accounts for less than 1% of global aviation fuel and costs several times more than conventional jet fuel. Global engineered removals stand below 2 million tonnes. The CCC wants a 25 year strategy for net-zero aviation, full decarbonisation costs phased in for airlines, and contingency plans if clean technologies fail to scale. The government has not rejected the advice. It says it is investing in SAF production and that expansion must align with net zero. The question now is whether policy will force aviation to pay for its own cleanup or keep pushing the cost onto the climate.
