The Heathrow Animal Reception Centre, the UK's only facility that can receive any animal entering the country, has completed a clean energy upgrade. The project installed 94 solar panels and low-carbon heat pumps to replace outdated systems. The City of London Corporation, which manages the facility, says the upgrade will cut carbon emissions by nearly 56 tonnes per year and save over 44,500 pounds annually in energy costs. The work was done without disrupting the centre's 24/7 operations. The upgrade is part of the City Corporation's Climate Action Strategy, which targets net zero in its own operations by 2027. The solar panels will generate clean electricity on site to power heating, hot water, lighting, and ventilation. The heat pumps provide more consistent temperature control for the facility, which handles everything from pets and livestock to zoo species. Reducing reliance on the National Grid also strengthens energy resilience for this critical border facility.
