New research from UC Davis, published in Nature Climate Change, puts the lost productivity cost of heat stress from climate change at $41 for every ton of CO2 emitted in 2025. That makes labor the second largest category of climate damages, behind heat related deaths. The study combines wet bulb globe temperature projections with sector specific data on work intensity and outdoor exposure. The highest impacts fall on densely populated regions including India, Nigeria, China, Pakistan, the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa. Agricultural and construction workers face the most exposure, but indoor workers without air conditioning are also at risk. The authors say the evidence supports a social cost of carbon around $200 per ton, and that current federal guidance should not ignore the metric in regulatory analysis.
