North Devon College has opened a new Low Carbon Training Centre in Barnstaple, developed with heating technology manufacturer Vaillant Group UK. The centre will train apprentices and existing plumbing and heating professionals on the latest heat pump technologies. It is the only Vaillant training centre in the South West outside Bristol and one of only four colleges in the UK partnered with Vaillant, giving local engineers access to equipment and expertise close to home. The centre responds to growing demand for qualified heat pump installers as North Devon and Torridge are expected to build more than 1,300 new homes a year, many using heat pumps instead of gas boilers. The facility includes hands-on training with real equipment and courses for upskilling current workers. College leaders and Vaillant say the centre will help close the skills gap in the low-carbon heating sector, supporting both apprenticeships and professional development.

Good to see more training capacity for heat pumps. The real bottleneck is installers who know how to size and commission these systems properly. Hopefully they cover retrofit situations, not just new builds, because that's where most of the work will be.

Nice, but I wonder about the grid impact. Heat pumps add load, especially in winter. Are there plans for local network upgrades? The training centre is great, but the rollout will need distribution capacity too.

This is exactly the kind of skills investment needed for the heat pump rollout. But it's one centre. The gap is huge across the country. The question is whether funding and incentives will keep up with the training pipeline.

Only 4 colleges partnered with Vaillant in the UK? That shows how early we are in the transition. More of these partnerships will be needed if heat pumps are to replace gas boilers at scale.
