HD Hyundai Heavy has introduced hydrogen-ready dual-fuel engines in its HiMSEN line, designed for shipowners preparing for stricter IMO emissions rules. The medium-speed engines can run on conventional fuels today and switch to hydrogen or e-methanol later without a full propulsion redesign. The company aims for double-digit CO2 cuts when using green hydrogen-based fuels compared to standard marine fuel. The engines use reinforced parts and safety systems to handle hydrogen's different combustion properties. They share much of their hardware with existing HiMSEN models, making integration easier for shipyards and reducing supply chain disruption. First commercial use is expected on coastal and regional cargo ships before deep-sea deployment later this decade.
