HD Hyundai has received approval in principle from Lloyd's Register for a large car carrier design powered by a molten salt reactor, a type of small modular reactor (SMR). The design aims to produce zero carbon emissions during operation while enabling long-range, high-output voyages. This expands HD Hyundai's nuclear propulsion work beyond container ships into the car carrier segment, which is projected to grow to $4.5 billion by 2030. The project involves multiple Korean partners including Hyundai Glovis for operational planning and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute for reactor review.
