HBIS Group and the University of Belgrade have achieved breakthroughs in green steel production, including the trial of low-carbon automotive steel panels. Researchers confirmed that Serbian iron ore is compatible with hydrogen metallurgy, reaching a reduction degree of 99.74 percent. This technological shift aims to align Serbian steel production with the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). By reducing reliance on traditional carbon-heavy processes, the partnership seeks to lower the industrial carbon footprint of the Smederevo plant.

Hydrogen metallurgy sounds good on paper, but the energy requirements are massive. I wonder where the green hydrogen is actually coming from in Serbia. If it is just gray hydrogen from natural gas, the carbon benefit is basically zero.

That is the key point. CBAM cares about the actual emissions intensity. If they can prove the hydrogen is green, they avoid the border tax. Otherwise, this is just a technical exercise without a financial win.

Trial producing a few panels in a lab in Hebei is one thing. Scaling that to a full production line in Smederevo is where the real cost and labor hurdles hit. I want to see the CAPEX required to actually swap the furnaces.
