Haycarb develops advanced carbon materials for next-generation energy storage in Sri Lanka

Haycarb, a Sri Lankan activated carbon producer, is moving into advanced energy storage materials. The company has developed a high-purity activated carbon called HCE 400 for silicon-carbon composite anodes used in lithium-ion batteries. This material can increase energy density in electric vehicle batteries and grid storage systems. Haycarb invested USD 18 million in a new production facility to scale manufacturing of these materials. The company sources coconut shells from over 400 micro-entrepreneurs in Sri Lanka, using a by-product of the coconut industry as raw material. Haycarb has also implemented closed-pit charcoaling technology to reduce environmental impact. Several international customers have validated the HCE 400 material and are moving toward commercial production. The company received the Presidential Export Award for Innovative Export Product for this work.

The closed pit charcoaling is the part that caught my eye. Open pit charcoaling is a big source of black carbon emissions in tropical countries. If they can scale that tech it matters beyond just the battery material.

USD 18 million for a production facility is not huge in battery materials terms. Would be good to know what annual output that buys. Silicon carbon anodes still have cycle life issues last I checked. Hope the HCE 400 addresses that.

The article is light on cycle life data and performance specs. For a material that is supposed to compete in EV and grid storage, those numbers matter. Without them it is hard to assess if this is a real breakthrough or a lab curiosity.

Coconut shell carbon is already used in water filters and air purifiers. Moving that same supply chain into battery materials is a logical step. The question is whether the purity requirements for batteries can be met consistently at scale.
