Hawaii airports reach Level 3 carbon accreditation, cut emissions toward 2045 net zero goal

Hawaii's five largest airports have earned Level 3 accreditation under the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program, a global carbon management standard. The designation means the airports have mapped their emissions, set a net zero target, and reduced emissions below a three-year rolling average. The state aims to cut airport-controlled carbon emissions 50% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2045, aligning with Hawaii's broader energy goals. The Hawaii Department of Transportation said the accredited hubs include Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Kahului Airport, Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport, Lihue Airport, and Hilo International Airport. Efforts include transitioning fossil fuel vehicles to zero emission alternatives and expanding clean transportation infrastructure. The agency noted that hitting the 2045 net zero target depends on continued state and federal funding for key projects.
