Hawaii airports reach Level 3 carbon accreditation, cut emissions toward 2045 net-zero goal

Hawaii's five largest airports have earned Level 3 accreditation under the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program, marking a verified reduction in airport-wide carbon emissions. The state Department of Transportation said the designation means the airports have mapped emissions, set a net-zero target, and reduced emissions below a three-year rolling average while engaging partners on third-party emissions. The accredited hubs include Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Kahului Airport, Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport, Lihue Airport, and Hilo International Airport. The state aims to cut airport-controlled emissions 50% by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2045, matching Hawaii's broader energy goals. Officials noted that achieving net-zero depends on continued state and federal funding for key infrastructure projects like clean transportation and zero-emission vehicle transitions.
