Hapag-Lloyd and Seaspan Complete First Methanol Ship Retrofit: 30,000-50,000 Tonnes CO2e Reduction Per Vessel

Hapag-Lloyd and Seaspan Corporation have completed the first methanol retrofit of a 10,100 TEU container ship, the Seaspan Yangtze. The conversion replaces a conventional MAN S90 engine with a dual-fuel engine capable of running on methanol. This is the first of five vessels in a joint program with an estimated total investment of $120 million. Each retrofit can reduce CO2e emissions by 30,000 to 50,000 metric tons per vessel per year when using low-carbon methanol. The project extends the operational life of existing ships while increasing fuel flexibility, supporting Hapag-Lloyd's goal to decarbonize fleet operations by 2045. Retrofitting existing vessels is a key strategy alongside newbuilds and efficiency improvements.
