Hapag-Lloyd and Seaspan complete first methanol engine retrofit on Seaspan Yangtze, cutting ship emissions

Hapag-Lloyd and Seaspan Corporation completed the first methanol engine retrofit on the 10,100 TEU Seaspan Yangtze. The conversion turns a conventional engine into a dual-fuel unit that can run on methanol. Each retrofitted vessel can cut CO2e emissions by 30,000 to 50,000 metric tons per year when using low-carbon methanol. The project is part of a $120 million program covering five large ships. Retrofitting existing vessels instead of building new ones extends the operational life of the fleet and helps shippers meet Scope 3 reduction targets. The partners aim to reduce carbon emissions while keeping refrigerated cargo capacity in service. Hapag-Lloyd plans to reach fleet decarbonization by 2045 through a mix of new builds, dual-fuel retrofits, and efficiency upgrades.
