Hallandale Beach, Florida was named a finalist in the 2026 Mayors' Climate Protection Awards for its zero-emission electric bus fleet called the Cloud. The small city received an Honorable Mention from the US Conference of Mayors for replacing its gas-powered transit with nine electric buses, creating one of the largest municipally owned electric bus fleets in South Florida. The $5.9 million project was funded by a $3.4 million state grant and $2.5 million from the city. The Cloud bus system launched in 2024 and provides free transportation to residents, improving air quality and reducing noise pollution. Hallandale Beach aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2055 and has also expanded electric and hybrid vehicles across municipal operations, including a large hybrid police fleet. The award highlights how small cities can lead on sustainable transportation and climate action.
