Unit 3 of the Huaneng Changjiang Nuclear Power Phase II project in Hainan has started commercial operation, becoming the province's first reactor using China's third-generation Hualong One technology. This marks China Huaneng's first large pressurized water reactor unit as controlling stakeholder, following its earlier high-temperature gas-cooled reactor project. The project, with two 1.2-gigawatt units, is expected to generate 18 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually. That output would replace over 6.32 million metric tons of standard coal and cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 11.6 million tons each year, supporting the Hainan Free Trade Port and China's dual-carbon goals.
