Hainan low-carbon island update: gas network hits 35 billion cubic meters, EV sales ban set for 2030
news.cgtn.comHainan's island-loop natural gas pipeline network has passed 35 billion cubic meters in cumulative gas transmission, according to PipeChina. The 899 km network serves power plants, industrial users, and urban gas customers across 14 cities and counties, and has displaced an estimated 46.6 million tonnes of coal, cutting CO2 emissions by more than 51.2 million tonnes. The province is also moving to cleaner transport. A plan released in July calls for a ban on new fuel-powered vehicle sales by 2030, the first such target at provincial level in China. Public service fleets and private vehicles added or replaced after 2030 would need to run on clean energy. By the end of 2025, clean energy accounted for 87.2% of installed power capacity. Longer term, Hainan aims to peak carbon emissions before 2030, complete the low-carbon island buildout by 2045, and reach carbon neutrality by 2060. The policy covers industrial, urban, and transport emissions, plus carbon sinks and carbon management.
