Hailsham Vicarage Lane car park solar panels: 456 panels, 217,000 kWh, £54,000 annual savings
theargus.co.ukPlans for a solar canopy over Vicarage Lane car park in Hailsham have been approved by Wealden District Council. The project will mount 456 solar panels above parking spaces in the lower section of the car park, with construction expected to run from November 2026 to March 2027. Leisure Energy, a public sector contractor, will handle the work. The array is expected to generate about 217,000 kWh of renewable electricity per year, enough to offset power used at council offices and cut energy costs by roughly £54,000 annually. Any surplus electricity will be exported to the grid. The lower car park will close in phases during construction, and a height restriction barrier will be added once the canopy is live. The project is part of a broader push by the council to use existing assets for local renewable generation. It also shows how a straightforward car park retrofit can deliver both carbon savings and a visible reduction in public sector energy bills.
