The EU-funded H4PERION project is working to decarbonize long-distance shipping by developing a full-scale hydrogen-capable internal combustion engine. The project involves 16 partners, including Wärtsilä and the University of Vaasa, to create fuel-flexible systems that can run on hydrogen and biomethane blends. These new technologies will be tested on the Aurora Botnia ferry and in laboratory settings. A key focus is the development of catalyst systems to reduce methane slip, lowering the overall lifecycle carbon footprint of maritime transport.
