Gyeonggi Transportation Corporation started pilot operations of the Ddok Bus, an eco-friendly demand-responsive transit service using electric buses, in Gwangmyeong City on June 22. The service connects residents to Line 7 subway stations, aiming to cut emissions and improve mobility in underserved areas. Full operations begin July 6. The electric Ddok Bus runs from 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., with fares matching standard city bus rates and integrated transfer discounts. Users can book rides via the Ddokta app or by phone for those less comfortable with digital tools. The initiative is part of Gwangmyeong's 2024 Smart City project. This deployment shows a practical step toward reducing transport sector carbon emissions in South Korea. By combining electric vehicles with on-demand routing, the service targets both environmental goals and last-mile connectivity. It will be worth watching how ridership scales and whether similar models expand across Gyeonggi Province.
