Gyeonggi Province in South Korea reports that its Climate Action Opportunity Income app has surpassed 2 million subscribers since launching in July 2024. The mobile platform rewards residents for everyday carbon-reducing activities such as using public transportation, walking, cycling, and choosing reusable cups at cafes. According to the province, cumulative greenhouse gas reductions from user actions total roughly 630,000 tons, which they compare to planting about 5 million trees. The app is designed as a carbon neutrality platform that connects daily habits to measurable emission cuts. Officials say the milestone reflects voluntary participation and plan to use user feedback to improve the program. The approach offers a concrete example of how local governments can use digital tools and small incentives to drive broad public engagement in decarbonization efforts.
