Gwalior Ag University's Three Natural Compost Models Aim to Cut Fertilizer Use and Improve Soil Health
etvbharat.comRajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Agricultural University in Gwalior is working on three natural compost and farming models for smallholders. The first model targets high income through multilayer farming, the second focuses on climate-resilient fruit and vegetable crops that need less water, and the third is built around farmers who have limited livestock and land. The university says the compost will be made from local crop residues and can be adjusted to deliver specific nutrients like sulphur or phosphorus. The project also includes biochar and compost production under a net-zero carbon emissions approach. That could cut reliance on chemical fertilisers, keep agricultural waste out of burn piles, and improve soil health. The university plans to train farmers on scientific natural farming techniques. The next step is seeing how these models perform on real farms and whether the compost recipes hold up outside a research station.
