Guyana is developing a 3MW grid-tied solar photovoltaic plant at Cheddi Jagan International Airport. The project aims to offset daytime energy use and export excess power to the national grid, saving an estimated US$800,000 in annual electricity costs. Scheduled for completion in June 2027, the facility is expected to generate over 112 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy over its 25 year lifespan. This initiative will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 72,000 metric tonnes.

3MW is a decent size for an airport, but I wonder about the grid stability in that specific area of Guyana. If they are exporting excess power, does the local distribution network have the capacity to handle the bidirectional flow without voltage spikes?

Saving 800k a year is a strong headline, but I want to see the O&M budget. Solar in tropical, high humidity environments requires aggressive cleaning and inverter maintenance. If they didn't bake those costs into the savings estimate, the actual ROI will be lower.
