Guyana Power and Light (GPL) is installing a 60 MWh / 30 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to improve grid reliability. The project involves two lithium-ion battery systems at the New Sophia and Goedverwagting substations, aimed at reducing power outages and supporting the Low Carbon Development 2030 goals. Developed by PowerChina International Group, the system will provide black start capabilities and better integrate renewable energy into the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System. The project includes systems integration with the National Control Centre and is expected to be completed within eight months.
