Guyana LCDS carbon credit funds finance solar grids, eco-tourism, and village infrastructure for Indigenous communities
guyanachronicle.comGuyana's Low-Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) is channeling carbon credit revenue into tangible projects for Indigenous villages in Region Eight. Village leaders report new solar home systems, ICT hubs, guesthouses, fuel depots, and craft centers funded through carbon finance. Over 37,000 solar home systems have been installed in remote communities, and a 24-hour solar grid now serves Batavia Village. The National Toshaos Conference, held July 20-24, 2026, will review these investments and discuss further priorities like road upgrades and water supply. The government has allocated G$7.5 billion in the 2026 budget for Indigenous development, with additional funding from carbon credit agreements under LCDS. Zero-interest loans and land titling programs are also expanding economic opportunities for hinterland communities.
