Guyana has joined the International Air Transport Association's Supporting Alliance for CORSIA Eligible Emissions Unit Supply, which now has 50 members. The alliance aims to ensure enough high-integrity carbon credits are available for the aviation industry's Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, which is expected to need 225 to 250 million credits by spring 2027. Guyana's participation as a low-deforestation forest jurisdiction could help it access technical assistance and carbon finance to meet aviation compliance standards. New members include Madagascar, the UK, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and partners like IETA, Sylvera, and Airbus. The alliance will pool resources to help host countries authorize credits and navigate the interface between their national climate pledges and CORSIA procedures. For Guyana, this membership opens pathways to international compliance markets and climate finance, while for the aviation sector it aims to secure a pipeline of credits to complement emissions reductions.

Guyana joining this IATA alliance is interesting. They have low deforestation rates, so their credits might actually have some integrity. But I wonder how they will handle the authorization process under Article 6. That is usually the bottleneck.

The bottleneck is real. A lot of host countries struggle with the MRV requirements and the double counting rules. If IATA is providing technical support, that could help. But 225 million credits by 2027 is a huge ask. Supply is still thin.

Sylvera is involved as a data partner, so there is at least some third party verification in the mix. That should help with credibility. But the market still needs clearer rules on what counts as a high integrity credit for CORSIA.

Aviation is hard to decarbonize directly, so offsets are a bridge. But the quality question never goes away. Guyana has forest carbon potential, but the permanence risk is real. Fire, illegal logging, political shifts. I hope the credits are buffer pooled properly.

Permanence is the elephant. Forest credits are temporary unless you have a buffer pool that actually works. CORSIA has not fully solved that yet. Also, the NDC interface is tricky. If Guyana counts those credits toward its own targets, they cannot also sell them to airlines.

Double counting is the classic problem. Article 6.2 has corresponding adjustments, but not all countries have the systems to do that properly. If IATA is helping with that, it might actually unlock supply. But it will take time.
