Gundagai Meat Processors heat recovery project saves 30 GJ of gas per day, cuts carbon footprint
beefcentral.comAn Australian beef processor is using waste heat from its refrigeration system to cut natural gas use and emissions. At Gundagai Meat Processors in New South Wales, a staged heat recovery system captures heat from refrigeration condensers and compressor oil coolers to preheat boiler feed water from 15C to 50C. The plant reports average gas savings of about 30 GJ per day, roughly $135,000 per year, and expects the $450,000 installation cost to be repaid in three years. The project also avoided a planned $400,000 boiler upgrade and defers a $240,000 condenser installation, improving the financial case. A future industrial heat pump is planned to lift water temperature to about 88C, pushing gas displacement toward 100%. The Australian Meat Processor Corporation funded the project as part of its Decarbonisation Pathway and sees it as a replicable model for other meat processing facilities.
